Visiting the newest member of my family in Florida, I’m reminded of how newborns can exhibit qualities of mindfulness. Lessons learned from infants include their ability to participate fully in each moment: To relax completely when there is no immediate danger or need; and even to react with irritation or frustration at an event, but to let the feelings go as the event passes by.
One of the practices of mindfulness is called “beginner’s mind,” referring to an openness and lack of preconceptions when witnessing what is unfolding in life. This applies even to engaging in highly familiar tasks, such as working in an area of expertise or engaging in the simple act of breathing. Here are a couple brief stories that illustrate beginner’s mind.
